What is displayed in the thumbnail pane is just a dynamic view of the page, every bit as much as the page is itself - if it doesn't have embedded thumbnails, and perhaps even if it does. The thumbnail view has much more detail than the embedded ones you would have seen back in the days of Acrobat 3, 4.
